STAFF REDUCTIONS

Discussion

There are times when NPCs cannot avoid laying off employees.  However, NPCs should reserve the right to initiate layoffs based on any reason including financial or economic circumstances or other factors that are deemed important.  An “at will” clause in the employee handbook and the letter of hire will prevent many problems.  However, care should given to reduce staff on a non-discriminatory basis.

Sample policy

Layoffs or staff reductions are terminations resulting from a variety of reasons but may include reorganization, a reduction in supporting funds, termination of a project, or the deletion of work functions. The PI or supervisor, in consultation with the executive director, will select positions or classes to be deleted. Seniority and qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skills, and abilities) may be considered if there is more than one employee in the same class.
