MAY 23, 2007 – FY 2008 R&D APPROPRIATIONS OFF TO A GOOD START
On May 22, the House
Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veteran’s Affairs,
and Related Agencies marked up its FY 2008 funding bill and proposed
$480 million for the VA Medical and Prosthetic Research Program. This
funding level is precisely the amount recommended by the Friends of VA
Medical Care and Health Research (FOVA), the Independent Budget and the
Federation of American Scientists for Experimental Biology (FASEB). It
is also a significant improvement over the president’s budget request
for flat funding at $411 million.
The next step in the FY 2008 appropriations
process - full Appropriations Committee action - is expected to occur
after the Memorial Day recess. Shortly after then, more details will
become available.
Although this is just the first of many steps in the FY 2008
appropriations process, it is a very encouraging one. |
