PUBLIC OPENNESS AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Discussion
Public trust is essential to the existence of nonprofits. To gain and maintain the public trust, federal and state laws mandate that all 501(c)(3) organizations are legally obligated to make specific documents available to the public. In addition, the statute that authorizes the NPCs
requires them to make all of their records available to certain oversight
organizations. However, voluntary openness can foster good relations with the
general public and potential donors. Discussion of various elements of openness
follows.
