ANNUAL REPORTS FOR INTERNAL AND PUBLIC DISSEMINATION

Discussion

An annual report is a public relations tool that communicates to the general public, internal audiences and potential donors the value of the organization to the community it serves, names the dedicated citizens who guide and oversee it, and provides a reassuring snapshot of its finances. It should include a description of each program the organization supports and how those programs fulfill its mission and tax-exempt purpose. Information generally contained in an annual report includes:

  • Mission statement
  • Description of key program activities and achievements for the previous year
  • Basic financial information (i.e., statement of financial condition, revenues and expenses for the year)
  • List of Board members and key staff

While glossy annual reports are customary in the for-profit arena, nonprofit reports can be as modest as a simple narrative and a couple of graphs and still send a compelling message of serving the public good, and in the case of the NPCs, VA medical staff and veterans. All NPCs are encouraged to develop a simple annual report that highlights the achievements of the previous year and to share it with the board, medical center staff and veterans.
