public relations for va research and npcs

The statutory purpose of NPCs is to facilitate the conduct of VA research and education.  Unfortunately, much of the general public is not well-informed about VA’s many contributions to advances in health care for veterans and the nation.  Provided below are links to resources available to NPCs interested in promoting VA research or increasing awareness of your NPC and the role it plays in supporting VA research.

NPCs engaging in public relations about VA research or the NPC’s role in supporting VA-approved studies and VA investigators should be aware of and comply with local VA medical center policies about contacts with the media.  NAVREF encourages NPCs to get to know and collaborate closely with the local public affairs officer (PAO).  These individuals will be familiar with VA-wide and facility-specific public relations requirements.  NPCs should consult with the PAO to coordinate public relations activities, press releases, etc., about VA research, including contacts from the media, in accordance with local policies.

Promoting VA Research and VA Investigators

The VA Research and Development website (http://www.research.va.gov/) has links to a wealth of information about VA research.  In addition to electronic resources, the Research Communications Service of the Office of Research and Development will ship its colorful and informative pamphlets, brochures and booklets upon request.  Email:  research.publications@va.gov

On VA’s R&D website you will find highlights of VA’s current research initiatives as well as links to VA Research Currents, a monthly publication produced by the Office of Research and Development which provides news about research results, new initiatives, major awards, research funding, and other matters of interest.  Online videos about VA research are also available.  For a video overview of VA research, go to:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82E2BOqbcl4.  Additionally, the VA website allows you to browse facility research programs throughout the country and to learn about participating in a research study.

Promoting NPCs

There are many reasons why an NPC may wish to promote itself.  For example, the NPC may wish to promote itself within the VA community to help VA recruit new investigators or to encourage existing VA investigators to bring funds to the NPC for administration.  Or, an NPC may wish to promote itself within the local community for fundraising purposes or even to find potential community board members.  Care should be given when preparing NPC promotional materials to ensure that NPCs do not inappropriately use VA materials (i.e., do not use the VA logo in NPC promotional materials) or imply VA support of the NPC or VA approval.  NPCs are encouraged to ask their local PAO to review their promotional materials.
