Proposed changes threaten continuity of long-term veterans' research

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Association of Veterans' Research and Education Foundations (NAVREF) today issued the following statement:

“We commend Senate leaders for including language in the continuing resolution that would temporarily prevent OMB’s proposed overhaul of the federal grantmaking process. The proposed changes created significant uncertainty for the future of federally funded research and for veterans, the stakes are especially high.

Many veterans’ research efforts follow veterans for years, even decades, to advance our understanding of PTSD, toxic exposures, traumatic brain injury, aging, and other conditions that disproportionately affect those who served. Introducing uncertainty into the federal grants process risks disrupting these long-term studies, delaying lifesaving discoveries, and slowing the translation of research into better care for veterans.

NAVREF remains committed to working with policy makers to ensure that any reforms to the federal grants process strengthen accountability while preserving the stability, scientific integrity, and continuity that veterans' research depends on.”
